W H Davies suffered all his life from a condition which these days we would recognise as clinical depression.

In The Dark Hour he explains that even though he ought to be happy, he is nonetheless sad - and does not know why.

Many of W H Davies' poems are similarly depressive - even his most famous piece 'Leisure' has a dark undertow to it.
