He puts him on trial. He is really not a bad sort, this Prince, and doesn't leap to conclusions. He listens carefully to Benvolio's account of what happened, and discounts everything Mrs. Capulet says as partisan imaginings. He realizes that there is some merit in the plea that Tybalt had broken the law by fighting with Mercutio and deserved to be put to death anyway, and Romeo just finished what the law would have done. On the other hand, he realizes that vigilantes should not be encouraged, so he will not let Romeo off scot free. He banishes him from the city as punishment.
