If you're only helpful to someone who may later be helpful to you, then you're not really being nice, you're just looking out for yourself. You're not losing anything, you're making an investment and expecting a payout later. But if you're helping someone who'll never be in a position to do anything for you, then you've given something up w/o expecting anything in return, and that's a sacrifice.
