There are two main ways of becoming a lighting technician. You could either qualify as an electrician or get practical experience in production lighting, or you could take a technical theatre course at college or university.
Currently, to qualify as an electrician you will need either:
· NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Electro-technical Services (Electrical Maintenance) or
· NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Installing Electro-technical Systems and Equipment (Buildings and Structures).

If there is only one technician then the role is to set up the rigs and then operate the controls to provide the appropriate ambience during play (variable lux and colours usually). In a group then other technicians are usually moving and interchanging the lights when necessary.

The lighting technician is usually in the lighting booth of a theatre or the front-of-house position in an arena. In the case of a travelling show, a lighting technician will travel with the road crew and supervise the setup of the lighting rig by the local crew.
