William Shakespeare had no formal role in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. She would certainly have seen some of performances of his plays but he did not move directly in court circles. He was more known to her successor King James I and some of his plays were performed in court.
At the time he was writing, Shakespeare was not considered to be such a great deal. He was one of a large number of playwrights writing for the London theatres. His position was like that of a writer of TV scripts, although he was better known. His work was well-known and well-liked enough to be published occasionally during his lifetime, which can also be said of many of his contemporaries.
He raised the standard for playwrights. His plays were so good that others had to improve to compete with them.
