Shakespeare became a founding member of Lord Hunsdon's Men (acting company) in 1594. It became the Lord Chamberlain's Men soon after its formation and The King's Men in 1603. As a permanent member in one of the most successful theater companies, he had sufficient security to allow him to write his plays and a company dedicated to producing and performing them.
