What foods did Romeo and Juliet eat?

Some things were different. They did not have new world foods like potatoes, tomatoes, corn, chocolate, and vanilla. Coffee and tea were not yet popular. Sugar was ridiculously expensive and not used; honey would be easier to get. There was no refrigeration so milk was difficult to keep. Recipes of the time called for almond milk (crushed almonds soaked in water) instead. Milk that was turned into butter and cheese kept a bit better.

On the other hand, the Elizabethans in some ways ate a more varied diet than we do. They ate a broader spectrum of meat, including the meat of swans, peacocks, and deer. They also had different vegetables and fruits. Fruits like quinces and medlars are unheard of nowadays. Salads (which they called sallets) included a number of greens and herbs we do not use as well as edible flowers.

Obviously they ate food, but it is worth noting that foods which have their origin elsewhere in the world, especially those which originate in the americas, did not form much of a part of the sixteenth-century English diet. So they had no potatoes, tomatoes, vanilla, chocolate, or peppers of any colour, all of which are from the Americas. They had no tea or coffee or bok choy or kiwifruit or mangoes or bananas. Milk went bad very quickly so unless you lived on a farm you only got it in the form of cheese or butter. Meat was eaten in a state which would be considered to be well after its best before date now.

They did have some fruits which are not familiar to us, such as medlars.

Diet varied considerably between wealthy and poor people. Wealthy people ate a great deal and variety of meat, including poultry and fish. There was also a broad variety of vegetables and salads (sallets) containing leaves and flowers of plants were common. Poor people would not have been able to eat meat as frequently and their diet would consist of more boiled peas and grains (pease porridge). Whichever the director decides. A play is not a record of real events, but instructions for putting on a performance which will tell a story. The director must interpret these instructions and answer such questions as "What is she wearing?", "What does this room look like?", "What do they eat and drink?" The director will carefully read the play and find that in Act I Scene 2 the servant says that they will "crush a cup of wine" which could mean that wine is on the menu, or could be just a figure of speech. At the beginning of Act I Scene 5 we have the servants clearing away the dishes--obviously the food and drinks were all served, eaten and cleared away before the real action of the scene started. Most directors take this as a hint that food and drink is irrelevant to the scene and will not show any of it. Others might take note that one of the servants asks another to "save me a piece of marchpane"--clearly they had marzipan for dessert, and we might see some of the guests snacking on bits of dessert or sipping on a cup of wine. Or not. Because it would be totally OK for a director to visualize this party as a backyard barbeque and have the servants clearing empty beer bottles, corn cobs and half-eaten Hot Dogs if that worked with his or her vision of the play.
