What does 'pas de chat' mean in ballet?

It means literally a "cat's step". In ballet, it is executed by starting on two feet (foot A and foot B, for this purpose). As foot A is brought into passe the dancer jumps off of foot B and brings it quickly up into the position that would be passe if foot A were on the ground. Once the position is reached the dancers lands on foot A. The sequence as a whole is Foot A up, Foot B up, Foot A down, Foot B down, in other words, the legs move independently of each other. A pas de chat is always done very quickly.
