Alfred Noyes appears on the 1891 census with his parents Alfred and Amelia living at 17 Pier Street, Aberystwyth. He is the oldest of four children - Alfred aged 10, Henry aged 8, Maud A. aged 6 and Walter B. aged 2. The gap between Maud and Walter would suggest that his mother lost achild in the interim years as it was usual for families to have children every 2 years. The 1901 census shows Alfred Noyes (an Oxford Undergrad) now living with his parents at 19 Pier Street in Aberystwyth. Also living in the house are his sister Maud, then aged 16 and a brother Walter aged 12. Henry does not appear in the household, although further research could be carried out to see whether he left home or had perhaps died in the years between 1891 and 1901.
Oedipus came across the Sphinx on his way to Thebes in Greece. The sphinx asked him "What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon and three in the evening?" Oedipus pondered on this question and then read his correct answer "Man." The sphinx killed herself for this was the correct answer. Humans crawl while they're babies, or the start of their lives (morning- start of day) making it four feet. Then they walk with two (in the middle of their lives- afternoon) and three nearing the end of their lives for they walk with a walking stick.
