Now, are you buying for a home system, are you buying for a small office, or, and I seriously doubt that you are buying for a large company. Either way ,here we go. In a small office environment you may want to look at 2000 professional and 2000 professional server for (rdbms) or the 2003 server. These are system that will allow a mixture of xp machines and 98 machines. You will note with interest that these are all Ms systems. Now there are other OS's you may want to look at but Such as Unix, MacIntosh, Linux etc that I don't know much about.
