It's hard to say, seeing as how all we have are a painting, an engraving, and a statue to go by. In the engraving he looks kind of small and wimpy, whereas in the statue he looks a bit porky. It's possible that he started putting on weight as he approached 50. The engraving and the statue are the only images of Shakespeare which were approved by people who actually knew him, so that is what we have to go on.
