'Foolish tear' is a phrase used to encompass the strong sense of helplessness that the speaker/ poet feels for the tree . The tree was symbolic of his childhood days and his forefathers . This brings tears to his eyes and since no one would be able to understand his attachment to it , the tears appear foolish.
