New World
I.
First Man,
behold:
the earth
glitters
with leaves;
the sky
glistens
with rain.
Pollen
is borne
on winds
that low
and lean
upon
mountains.
Cedars
blacken
the slopes -
and pines.
II.
At dawn
eagles
hie and
hover
above
the plain
where light
gathers
in pools.
Grasses
shimmer
and shine.
Shadows
withdraw
and lie
away
like smoke.
III.
At noon
turtles
enter
slowly
into
the warm
dark loam.
Bees hold
the swarm.
Meadows
recede
through planes
of heat
and pure
distance.
IV.
At dusk
the gray
foxes
stiffen
in cold;
blackbirdsare fixed
in thebranches.
Riversfollow
the moon,the long
white trackof the full moon.

Author N Scott Momaday draws upon importance of place and past relationships to create his own sense of identity. In sociology and psychology, this is well-known. People are drawn to "go home" where family exists or once existed if now deceased. We'll even go to a cemetery of a loved one to make that re-connection, even if briefly to re-ground us to family.
You can find it in a book called The Continual Singing, an anthology of world poetry by William N. Scott on page 16
