He is a mature man, as he has a fifteen-year-old daughter who was born when he was Duke of Milan. He is often played as a very old man, as the last major Shakespearean role undertaken by a Shakespearean actor, shortly after King Lear. But he could easily be portrayed as a man in his forties. The text itself gives no indication of his exact age.

In Act 1 Scene 2, Prospero says to Ariel that Sycorax came to the island with the baby Caliban, and shortly after imprisoned Ariel in the cloven pine "within which rift imprison'd, thou did painfully remain a dozen years." The dozen years ended when Prospero arrived on the island after being deposed. Prospero says to Miranda in the same scene "Twelve year since, Miranda, twelve year since, thy father was the Duke of Milan." So twelve and twelve makes twenty-four, which is Caliban's age, approximately.
