What is a main lesson in Much Ado About Nothing?

The main plot is the love of Claudio and Hero. Claudio is very jealous and is easily convinced that Hero was sleeping with someone else on the night before the wedding. Claudio ruins the wedding by refusing to say the vows and by accusing Hero of being a slut in front of her friends and family. She is devastated and is persuaded to pretend to be dead until the matter resolves itself.

The more interesting characters are those in the subplot. Beatrice and Benedick have made a habit of arguing with and insulting each other, but by means of the trickery of friends, are gradually drawn into confessing that they actually love each other.

The plot to deceive Claudio is unmasked through the efforts of the incredibly stupid police constable Dogberry and his force of officers almost as stupid. Claudio is contrite about the wrong he has done to Hero but agrees to marry her cousin instead, who is revealed at the wedding to be Hero herself. Benedick also arranges to marry Beatrice and all is a happy ending.

Perhaps, that the eyes of a lover do not see clearly, especially if you are Olivia and cannot see that the guy you are after is actually a girl. Perhaps that men and women are less different than you think, since Viola is a match for Sir Andrew in a duel, and has a lot of people fooled into thinking she is a man.

Or perhaps, and this can apply to the subplot also, that things are not always what they seem. Cesario looks like a man, Sebastian looks like Cesario and vice versa, the letter looks like Olivia's handwriting, Feste sounds like the curate, etc. etc. But then this is a common theme in many if not most of Shakespeare's plays, including histories and especially tragedies.

For example, I would take away from this play the firm conviction that if you suspect your fiancée of adultery, you should reveal your suspicions privately, not publicly during the wedding ceremony.
