Basically the Proscenium Stage. As audiences grew larger and playhouses became more profitable in the eighteenth century, the auditoriums of pubic theatres increased steadily in size. As auditoriums expanded, theatre architects added boxes for the affluent and cheap seats in the galleries for the less well-off. The stage contains a framed stage with movable scenery, machines, lighting, and sound equipment; an auditorium seating 500 to 1500 or more; and auxiliary rooms, including foyers, box offices, workrooms, dressing rooms, and storage space. The function is to create pictorial illusion and recognizable worlds. In the proscenium theatre, the stage is usually hidden by a curtain until it is time for the play's world to be "discovered" by the audience. They try to create a self-contained world so to say.
