I think it's a typo, but the correct spelling is simile. A simile is a comparison of one object to another using the words "like" or "as." i.e. "The pillow was as soft as a cloud" or "The dog's bark was like a siren going off" Similes are often used in poetry, but I've seen them in novels occasionally.
