The term "spear carrier" generally refers to a non-speaking actor in a play, or non-singing actor in an Opera, who is there in the background in crowd scenes, or maybe as an escort to one of the main players. The expression comes from historical drama where extras were dressed as soldiers and carried spears, or banners.
