A 'catchment' is the area of ground which drains into a river. A catchment model would be a mathematical (computer) construct of a river catchment with parameters such as topography, soil types, vegetation cover, settlement, subsurface geology and hydrology. These would then be run against theoretical atmospheric conditions bringing precipitation, temperature, sunlight, wind. This would then enable people to predict what will happen to the drainage system under certain conditions, perhaps enabling prediction of flood conditions so that people can be warned and moved to designated dry ground. IT would also provide information regarding how much water could be extracted from the system for agriculture or industry, or show up changes that may happen to a catchment if part of the catchment is used for agriculture.
