April 23 is probably celebrated more as Shakespeare's birthday than as any other day. It is a national holiday in Turkey and Spain. Among Catholics it is the feast day of a number of saints, the most notable of which is St. George. St. George's day is celebrated in England, as St. George is the patron saint of England (but not Britain). Since 1995, UNESCO has been promoting April 23 as World Book Day. The idea has not got much traction except in Spain where it was celebrated anyway (and it also happens to be the date of death of Spain's most celebrated author, Cervantes). In Britain, the government announced a Book Day to be celebrated in March.
