What Country Did Clowning Begin In?

Clowning as a performance art has roots that can be traced back to ancient civilizations, but it is most commonly associated with Italy during the Renaissance period. The character of the "Harlequin" in the commedia dell'arte, a theatrical form that emerged in the 16th century, played a significant role in the development of clowning. Over time, clowning evolved and spread across Europe, influencing various theatrical traditions and leading to the modern clown characters we recognize today.

What is krumping?

Krumping was created in 1992 in South Central Los Angeles by Thomas Johnson. Thomas was a former convict that was committed to changing his life around after he was released. Because of his fun and high spirited personality a co-worker asked him to be a clown for a birthday party. Thomas Johnson became Tommy the Clown and used his hip-hop dance moves to entertain the children. He called this form of dance clowning. Soon Thomas realized that he had influence on the kids and decided to use clowning as a way to deter them from violence and drugs. He later started a dance crew called the Hip Hop Clowns that performed with him at birthday parties. He required that all the members of his crew did well in school, stay away from drugs and gangs, and act as positive role models to others. So many kids wanted to join the Hip Hop Clowns that Tommy began to encourage them to form their own crews. Each crew claimed to be the best so in 2002 Tommy began to invite the crews to battle. This is when the term krumping was first used. They called it krumping because the moves were too rough for clowning. Battle Zone was then created to give an outlet to the argument of "whose krumping or clowning was the best." According to Tommy, krumping is when your body is doing a lot of different moves while dancing. It looks like you're fighting on the dance floor. It has a fast pace with a lot of sharp moves
