contemporary is more flowing, more natural to the body, it is really just a name for all other types of dance that don't have a category for themselves. Hip-hop has a higher, more explosive energy level and can not really be done solo. Contemporary is not controlled and everybody has a different style, Hip-hop has isolations and a lot more strength needed. Contemporary is like water when performed well, Hip-hop, like ice.
