Phase is a time shift done electronically to sweep the audio spectrum from 0 degrees to 360 degrees in a set time frame, known as oscillation. Phasing an audio clip will give the original wave form a loss of low-end at the beginning of the sweep to an almost transparent, or nonexistent, portion of the form at 180 degrees. It is also known as sinusoidal. In Adobe Audition, it is to be used as an audio effect, such as an early long-distance AM radio transmission, so that the listener can feel as though the clip is in an early time period. Care should be taken in using the effect, as it is different than analogue flanging, or in its day, the use of two audio reel-to-reel tape decks to set the time sequence off by milliseconds. Examples of this in music are "Dreamtime" from Hall and Oates, "Pictures of Matchstick Men" from Status Quo, and "Itchykoo Park from Small Faces.
