Hello my friend. I actually just recently finished reading Way to Rainy Mountain about 15 minutes ago. I believe that the purpose that Momaday had in writing in it was to preserve his people's stories, particularly that of his grandmother and grandfather. As I read it I first thought this is quite spontaneous and even a little random. However as I read I came to realize that he was telling the stories of his people and of his family in a real way. It was like you were sitting down with him having a conversation and he would tell all these different stories and legends. I hope this helps.
