They both were close
Marlowe has excellent stories and underlining meaning in his plays but his characters are very dry and two dimensional.
Shakespeare learned from Marlowe and created underlining theme stories but with relateable complex characters.
Marlowe was also better at state stuff. He was the first to use special effects

∙ 11y agoMarlowe's life was full of controversy, and his death was violent and mysterious. Burbage and Shakespeare, on the other hand, let pretty calm uncontroversial lives. The only things close to controversy about them is when Burbage had his theatre taken down and moved across the river despite the objections of his landlord, and when their theatre company put on Richard II at the behest of the Earl of Essex.
