1.4 is just the latest technology. It just means that with a HDMI 1.4 cable, you will get faster data transferring. If I was going to buy a HDMI cable and not know what version to get, I would just get the cheapest one.
HDMI 1.4 is the specification for cable that is compatible with 3D transmissions. If you purchase a 1.3 spec cable, it may work with 3D, but it is not guaranteed. 1.4 also has the provision for Audio Return Channel, which may or may not be supported through your equipment.
