The longest running play on Broadway was called Life with a Father. It closed in 1947 with a total of 3,224 performances.
when a show is "off Broadway it means that the show is still playing, but no longer playing in a Broadway theatre. This is not actually true. A show that is running off Broadway may or may not have ever been on Broadway. Many shows start off-broadway and get picked up to move into a Broadway theatre. And many more ONLY run off-broadway.
The premiere was on February 14, 1972, though he wasn't part of the original cast. He was an understudy at first. He played many many characters, including Dany Zuko (during the mid-1970s) and Kenickie and was the male lead during the 1000th performance. He stayed at least until december 2, 1979 (after Grease), when the show passed "Fiddler on a Roof" as Broadway's longest running show. The show was now at its3243rd performance. By the time it closed on April 13, 1980, it had run 3,388 performances. I'm guessing he stayed because it was not much long after december 1979 !

It's probably impossible to tell which team had the most performances, as many of the classic comedy teams spent years performing daily in Vaudeville or in the British variety theater. The Marx brothers began performing on stage as children in vaudeville, and through much of their film career on Broadway. Most of the stars of the thirties and the forties also started in live daily theater. In terms of the comedy team with the most performances you can actually watch, it's probably Abbot & Costello, who made many short films, radio shows, television specials, feature films, and a long-running TV series, many of which are still available.
