The poem is a disillusioned musing on Maud Gonne, the Irish feminist and nationalist, an object of Yeats' pesistent but unfulfilled love.Despite his persistent proposals to marry him she chose another man in their own circle. When Gonne's daughter turned down his request to marry him,he continued the spiritual married life with Gonne. The poem, written in 1938 is a last look at the unfulfilled infatuation.Gonne is no longer a living legend of passion but a bronze head that attends all political funerals. Her head had been cast in plaster by Lawrence Campbell in the Municipal Gallery in Dublin. The decay of warm relationship coincided with war and unrest in the world.Hysterica passio refers to The King Lear and means sheer madness, a favourite phrase of Yeats to indicate the decadence of Irish public life of the time. The tomb haunting lady was once the elixir of life to revolution;but now a lifeless statue. And revolution failed in bloodshed and disorder. This is one among the last poems of Yeats.
