The masking curtain , usually black will be brought either across or down from the flies (up in the stage roof) to cover (mask) the scene.
Other ways are when stage lights have to be brought out more in to the auditorium for effects , these look unsightly so gantries carrying then m are masked to hide the mechanical equipment
