Twelfth night is regarded as January 6th - but strictly speaking the twelfth night after Christmas is the evening of January 5th.

January 6th is the feast of the Epiphany, which commemorates the arrival of the three wise men to Bethlehem, following the birth of Jesus.

That event was important because it showed that Jesus was not just born for the Jews, but was to be acknowledged by all mankind... the non-Jews and the Jews (represented by the shepherds).

The Twelfth Night also went by the lesser-known title 'What you will'.
Well, Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are travelling by ship, but their ship is wrecked and Viola washes up on the shore of Illyria. She disguises herself as a boy called Cesario and goes to work for the count, Orsino. She falls in love with Orsino but Orsino is only interested in girls, specifically a lady called Olivia. He sends Cesario to Olivia to try to woo her. Unfortunately Olivia falls in love with Cesario instead.

Now, at Olivia's house there is her alcoholic cousin Sir Toby Belch, who has persuaded the goofy knight Sir Andrew Aguecheek that he has a chance of wooing Olivia himself. The two of them, together with the professional comedian Feste and Olivia's housemaid Maria, are whooping it up into the small hours when Malvolio, Olivia's self-righteous, vain and Puritanical steward breaks up the party. To get revenge on him, Maria forges a letter that makes Malvolio think (in a truly hilarious scene) that Olivia is in love with him and wants him to wear yellow stockings and smile all the time (Malvolio has never smiled before). When he appears before Olivia dressed in this bizarre manner, smiling and making lewd suggestions, she thinks he's a loony and has him locked up.

There is another very funny scene where Sir Toby persuades Sir Andrew that in order to impress Olivia he must fight a duel with Cesario. Viola has had zero training in swordfighting but it doesn't matter because Sir Andrew is equally inept.

The upshot is that Viola's brother Sebastian has not, in fact, drowned, and he shows up causing the usual confusions that near-identical twins can cause. In the end he runs into Olivia who romances him and proposes marriage. Sebastian cannot believe his luck and marries her, then goes off to wash his socks or something and Olivia meets Orsino walking with Viola. She calls Cesario "husband" which surprises Orsino and surprises Viola even more. Hilarity naturally ensues, and into the middle of the brouhaha steps Sebastian, who is reunited with Viola who is revealed to be a girl, whereupon Orsino proposes marriage to her.

Malvolio is released from prison, somewhat the worse for wear, and swears "I'll be revenged on the whole pack of you."

This short summary cannot do the story justice. I strongly recommend that you rent the film made in 1996 with Helena Bonham Carter as Olivia and Imogen Stubbs as Viola. It's very accessible and beautifully shot, and the actors are all terrific.
