Picture in your mind a Delicate dish. On this dish is a #2 pencil. Atop the pencil is a Jersey cow. Riding the cow is King George. He has a cut on his finger. In his other hand is a model of the USS Massachusetts. On the deck of the ship is Marliyn Monroe. She is wearing a crown and sash from being Ms. South Carolina. She is holding a ham in her hand. It is wrapped in sheet music; Carry Me Back to My Old Virginia Home. Through the ham and sheet music is a model of the Empire State Building. On top of the building, the flag of North Carolina is flying. Clutching the flag is a Rhode Island red rooster.

I don't think there is a C.W. Longnecker or ever was. I first heard the poem at a Dale Carnegie Seminar over 40 years ago. The trainer said it was a collaboration between Dale Carnegie and Percy Whitting and rather than credit themselves or make it anonymous, they "invented" Longnecker. I can't vouch by the explanation. I can just say that I conducted a comprehensive search of databases here and all other English -speaking countries and could find no entry, going back to 1940.
Ha Bet you would like to know wouldnt you ;)

In the first line of this poem, the poet is using a word.Seriously, we cannot see whatever you're reading at home. The question makes no sense unless we read the poem first.
