A poem's function is to translate what is in one person's head into another person's head... much like other forms of communication. A poem does this differently, and sometimes more effectively, depending on the subject, but that is a poem's main function. The difference from other forms of communication is probably that most poetry tries to convey one feeling, or one moment, or one situation really, really well, rather than conveying all the complexities of a novel, for instance... although some poetry (think Shakespeare) goes a lot further, while still keeping the tight, exact quality of poetry intact. Here is an interesting discussion on this subject that covers a lot of different points of view: http://www.poetrymagazine.org/magazine/0107/comment_178919.html
