the theme can actually be anything. it depends on the readers P.O.V. i just did a project on him and this is wat i wrote. Updike is talking about the idea of a limbo. a place between heaven and hell in which someone attempts to work off there sins. the whole poems an extended metaphor because he is comparing this airport with limbo the whole time. he is also trying to say that waiting there would eventually pay off when he says "amid promises of a beautiful life abroad." he is saying that after he has waited patiently in this "airport" (limbo) he shall be rewarded with "the beautiful life abroad" (heaven).

i hope this helped im only in 9th grade so...yah. but i think its pretty good :)
