The poem is a touching tribute to the crew of Bomber Command in the Second World War. Coward writes eloquently and movingly about the crew and their childhood, whilst on their way to the terrifying ordeal they faced night after night in enemy airspace over Germany and the occupied countries. At the same time he reserves his utter contempt for war profiteers and (ironically) entertainers and musicians in "soft" (reserved) occupations.
