The main theme in the poem is struggle. It tells of the hardship of a woman and the resilience and pride she shows despite her challenges. She labours on the long winding "aisle of asphalt" (a metaphor for her life) with her makeshift barrow in the rain, bare-feet. She makes her journey accepting her destiny as one who works a land on which she was born. Yet still able to find a place where she dared to walk and sing in the rain.
