Well, there are two main approaches. We can learn a lot incidentally about what life was like for people generally from letters, diaries, account books, and even works of literature. This builds up a general picture about the life of anyone in those days. Then at the same time we can use church records, legal records, land ownership records and government archives to learn facts about the particular life of the writer in question. There may even be gravestones or monuments which can tell us something. In addition, the subject of our study may have left personal correspondence or a diary which may give clues as to what was going on in his life, or, if that sort of thing cannot be found, he may be mentioned in the personal correspondence or diaries of his friends and associates, or others whose lives are in some way involved with his.

It is a largely discredited method to try to find clues to an author's personal life in the works he produces.

Is the writer of Matthew's Gospel mentioned in it?

Had the writer of Luke's Gospel ever met Jesus?

A:Even conservative Christians acknowledge that Luke the physician never met Jesus. Moreover, the attribution of the Gospel to Luke was only made during the second century, before which Luke's Gospel was anonymous. Biblical scholars say that there is not good reason to believe that Luke the apostle was the actual author of Luke's Gospel, so we do not know who the author really was. However, the evidence shows that it was written at the end of the first century or early in the second century, too late for theauthor to have been alive in the time of Jesus.
