Cithaeron is the mountain on which Oedipus is to be exposed in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. -- 405 B.C.E.).

Specifically, Cithaeron is a famous mountain outside Thebes. It also is infamous, as a place where children are abandoned by reluctant or scared parents. That is exactly why Oedipus is supposed to die from exposure and hungry wildlife: It is better for child to die than to grow up to his prophesied fate as a criminal who kills his father and a sex offender who marries his mother.

No one puts Theban King Oedipus in the mountains. Theban King Laius is warned that he will be killed by his son. He therefore is upset when his wife, Theban Queen Jocasta, becomes pregnant and delivers an infant son. He has the infant Oedipus' ankles run through with a rod. He then tells his wife to have Oedipus left alone in the mountains and exposed to the weather and the wildlife.

But Jocasta is troubled. She doesn't want her son to grow up and kill her husband. At the same time, she can't bear to kill her own child. So she gives the three day old infant to a trusted shepherd.

The shepherd likewise is reluctant to kill the helpless infant. So he doesn't leave Oedipus in the mountains. Instead, the rod is removed from the infant's ankles. The infant ultimately is given to another shepherd, who is from Corinth. That shepherd takes Oedipus back home to Corinth, where he's raised by the childless Corinthian sovereigns, King Polybus and Queen Merope.
