Each character has a dream. Walter Younger wants to own a liquor store, so he can provide for his family. Lena Younger wants a home for her family, so the family can grow as individuals. Beneatha Younger wants to be a medical doctor, so she can helps others. Like Mama, Ruth Younger wants her family to thrive.

The Great American Dream stresses that a person's background should not matter. Hard work and determination are the keys to achieving the American dream. Therefore, a working class family like the Youngers - even though they are African American - should be able to achieve their dreams.
