Bertram is prone to lying and deception. He lies to Helena in order to escape having to consummate their marriage. He lies to Diana in order to seduce her. He and his friends deceive Parolles in order to expose his cowardice and treachery. Finally, he repeatedly lies to the king of France when confronted by Diana. Of course, Diana also does her share of lying and deceiving, not only to the king but also by being complicit in the bed-trick with Helena (who at the time has deceived everyone into thinking that she is a pilgrim).
