William Shakespeare's theatre company was The Chamberlain's Men, named after The Lord Chamberlain, an official responsible for royal and public entertainment.

In 1603, when Queen Elizabeth I died and King James I became king, the new king became their patron and the name was changed to The King's Men.

Shakespeare stayed with the Chamberlain's men (later King's men) throughout the last part of his career as an actor, playwright and administrator. Other companies he had worked with to perform his plays include the Earl of Derby's, The Earl of Pembroke's and the Earl of Sussex' men.

Before Lord Hunsdon became Lord Chamberlain, and for a brief period after his death, before his son also became Lord Chamberlain, they were Lord Hunsdon's Men.

We are not sure which company Shakespeare was with before the formation of the Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1594. Lord Strange's Men, Lord Derby's Men and Lord Pembroke's Men have been suggested.

We don't know exactly who he worked for before he settled down permanently with the Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1594. Lord Strange's Men, Lord Pembroke's Men, and Lord Derby's Men have been suggested, in no particular order. Shakespeare's first theatrical company could have been any of these or another totally different company.

In the early part if his career, possibly 1590 to 1594, Shakespeare may have been associated with Queen Elizabeth's Men, Lord Strange's Men, and/or Pembroke's Men as an actor and/or a playwright. In '94 he joined Lord Hunsdon's Men as a founding shareholder. When Hunsdon became the Lord Chamberlain of England, the company took that name. When he died, the company reverted to the original name until young Hunsdon was also appointed Lord Chamberlain, when the company resumed it second name. In 1603, upon the ascension of James I, the company took on the title of its new patron and became the King's Men. The King's Men continued under that name until Parliament closed all of the theaters in 1642.

Prior to 1594 Shakespeare worked with a number of companies as an actor and as a playwright. The companies may have included Queen Elizabeth's Men, Pembroke's Men, Strange's Men, and possibly others. In 1594 he became a founding member of an acting company which lasted long after his death in 1616. The company formed as Lord Hunsdon's Men, but soon after Lord Hunsdon was appointed Lord Chamberlain of England, so the company changed its name to reflect the new elevated status of its patron. In 1603, King James I became the company's new patron and the company name again changed to the King's Men. The King's Men lasted until the closing of the theaters in 1642. Shakespeare also owned shares in the Globe, a public playhouse, and Blackfriars, a private playhouse.
