What your teacher is getting at is that Shakespeare's plays were sometimes (but not always!) performed in outdoor theatres where the stage was lit with natural sunlight. In such cases, they performed in the afternoon. But actually they were quite frequently performed indoors and in such cases they used candles and could perform any time the audience wanted them to.
When plays were performed indoors, as they very often were, especially in the winter time, they could be performed at any time, since the lighting was provided by candles. But if they were to be performed outdoors, in one of the great outdoor theatres of London of this period (Shakespeare's plays were primarily performed at the Theatre, the Curtain and the Globe) then they were performed in the afternoon, when the light was right for lighting the stage.
