Melodrama Stage appearance and structure
Because melodrama is such an over the top theatre it is best to leave the stage largely bare and with only a few key props that are to be used e.g. Chair, walking stick. The melodrama appropriate stage is made up of the foreground, middle ground and background. Foreground is used mostly where the actor on stage is speaking to the audience and using call and response. Middle ground is used for scenes when and actor is talking to another actor and background is used for suspense e.g. person in the background coming up behind someone in the middle ground, person gets a shock.

Melodrama tends to use a heightened form of language where everything is slightly exaggerated. Phrases such as 'Oh, woe is me!' would be common. Actors in melodrama also had complex physical language - specific actions and ways of moving helped the audience (who were often a long way from the stage) know who were the 'goodies' and the 'baddies'. Exaggerated gestures reinforced the action.
