However, he first became famous for Venus & Adonisand The Rape of Lucrece, published in 1593 and 1594, respectively. Each is a long poem based on a classical story of lust. Each ends in death.

V&A is, however, generally humorous and bawdy, straying significantly in some detail from its source. Judged by the number of reprints, it was very popular at the time.

Lucrece is a serious tragedy of rape and suicide, following its source much more closely. It was less popular, judged by reprints, but earned Shakespeare plaudits and respect from scholars of the time, such as Gabriel Harvey.

Shakespeare's Sonnets were first published in 1609. There was no reprint during the next century or so, and the few recorded remarks of the time were less than enthusiastic. The sonnets eventually became more popular (in their originally published form) after some two hundred years - mainly for the insights thought to be offered into their author. A few of the poems have since become well known or favourites.
