Before Oklahoma, most musicals were stories with songs added in where convenient; they didn't really advance the plot, they were just for entertainment. In Oklahoma, Rogers and Hammerstein wrote dialogue between characters in song. Laurie's ballet also explains that she is really in love with Curly, even though there is no spoken dialogue. Now we have musicals like Next to Normal, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar which are told entirely through music. Rogers and Hammerstein totally changed the way stories are communicated.
