At some time between 1585 and 1592 Shakespeare decided to go to London to try to make a living in the theatre business. We have no documentation whatsoever of why or how he made this decision, until he shows up in London having already had one of his plays performed.

Most people would say that it would be the death of his son Hamnet in 1596 when he was only eleven. Nowadays people consider the death of a person at a young age to be a terrible tragedy. But people in Shakespeare's day were much more blase about the death of children because it happened much more often than it does these days. Shakespeare had already experienced the death of his sister Anne when she was nine. People reacted much like the nurse in Romeo and Juliet when talking about her own dead daughter: "Well, Susan is with God."

Shakespeare was much more cut up about the death of his father, John Shakespeare, in 1600.
