Every tribe was different, but among the Plains tribes it was common practice for a war party to set out to avenge the death of a member of their own tribe.
So a Crow war party might want revenge for the death of a Crow warrior killed by Pikuni Blackfoot - any Pikuni they found would be killed and scalped. The scalp would be brought back to the grieving mother of the dead Crow and it would be cut into many parts, mounted on sticks and "danced" by the mother and her female friends and relatives, accompanied by drumming, singing and celebrations that might last four days. This was a way of helping the mother to overcome her grief.
In some tribes both men and women "danced" the scalps (or a single scalp cut into many portions); in others it was just the women.
It was believed the dance would eliminate the whites and bring back deceased Native Americans.
