I do not believe that she was "faking" her illness. Betty did have a legitimate medical sickness. At the time, there were no doctors who could diagnoise her symptoms, which in fact, were due from a type of fungi found in the wheat that was being eaten by the people of Salem. I could be incorrect, however my professor explained this since we had to read the book for an English class!
