To make a good first impression anywhere, with anyone, you should simply be yourself. Speak clearly and don't swear or use slang words. Know the common rules of etiquette which you can find online. Use your manners; be polite. Be confident but not overbearing or opinionated. Know at least a handful of non-controversial current events' topics that you could bring up if you need something to talk about while visiting. Engage members of the family in conversation. You can give one or two sincerecompliments if appropriate. After your visit, the next day write a short thank-you note to the head of the family (likely the grandparents or the person's house you visited).
With the Grandmother, only if you are sincerelyinterested in her stories, ask about her experiences as Miss America. She might pull out a photo album, or maybe she'll have photos placed in the room. Be interested in her as a person who has lived a life most people will never experience. If she's willing to talk about it, that might fill much of the time you're visiting.

The Northern Kingdom was defeated by the Assyrians and incorporated into their empire. The Assyrians imported a new aristocracy from Assyria to rule and keep the ten tribes in check. The aristocracy of the ten tribes was sent to Assyria to be non-sympathetic local rulers there. The exchange of aristocracies became standard process, and when the Babylonians took over from the Assyrians, and moved into southern Israel, they too exported the aristocracy to Babylon and introduced a new aristocracy from Babylon.
The northern ten tribes comprised the Kingdom of Israel. The Assyrians sent the aristocracy to rule peoples in Assyria, and imported a new aristocracy to rule the ten tribes. This technique ensured that each kingdom was ruled by an aristocracy which was not sympathetic to the locals, and avoided uprisings. The Babylonians when they took over from Assyria also followed this successful technique. And the Babylonians also took over the two southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin, sending off their aristocracies to Babylon and importing a new ruling aristocracy from there to replace them. The 'exile' was the aristocracy. The mass of the people remained in place in both events.
You sit around drinking tea, eating buicuits and gossiping with your Grandmother!! You didn't know that? Man, your DUMB!!
The Assyrians conquered the 10 tribes of the northern Isrealites. They did not scatter the tribes, they sent their aristocracy of to Assyria to rule new peoples there. They imported a new aristocracy to rule the ten tribes who remained in place. By this technique, they had unsympathetic rulers who would control the people and not tolerate any uprisings. The Babylonians did the same thing later to the two southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin - sending off their aristocracy to Babylon to rule there, and importing a new aristocracy to rule the tribes.
The northern 10 tribes of Israel had been captured by Assyria forty years earlier, their aristocracies were deported to Assyria and a new aristocracy brought in to rule the tribes. In 587 Jerusalem was besieged by Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon and was captured. Following the Assyrian technique, the Babylonians sent the aristocracy of the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin to Babylon and a new aristocracy was imported to rule the tribes and keep them quiet.
The Civil War destroyed the institution of slavery in the South, which was a central pillar of Southern society. Many Southern traditions, such as the plantation system and the primacy of agriculture, were also significantly disrupted by the conflict. Additionally, the war brought about significant social and economic changes that reshaped the fabric of Southern society.
The 10 northern tribes remained under the imported aristocracy which kept them under control. The deported aristocracy remained in control of people in Assyria, who they had been sent to rule. The two tribes of southern Israel remained under control of the imported aristocracy, as for the 10 tribes. Their aristocracy which had been deported to Babylon were given the option of returning to Judaea to try to reclaim their property. Some took the option and returned, with mixed success. The rest elected to stay in Babylon where they had settled in.
Setting The story is firmly set in the rural American South. The characters, particularly the grandmother, are imbued with classic Southern characteristics, and they display an intimate understanding of the landscape of which they are a part. As the family drives south from Georgia to Florida, the grandmother points out all along the way various things about the southern landscape-the kudzu, the plantations that are no more.
