However, on the wall of the church behind the grave there is a statue of Shakespeare and a plaque with a further poem, ending with the words "Obiit Ano Doi 1616 Aetatis 53 Die 23 Ap." meaning "Died in the Year of our Lord 1616, aged 53, on the 23rd day of April." The monument was erected by Shakespeare's wife and family very shortly after his death and is referred to in the First Folio of 1623.
