When in Rome by Mari Evans is a poem about a conversation btwn Mattie, and her slave owner. Mattie is being offered food, but does not recognize what she is being offered and thus finds the food very unappetizing. I'm not totally sure if Mattie is speaking out loud, or is keeping her responces to herself. Characterization and tone plays a huge part in understanding the poem. Hope you found this helpful. Good luck.
